Monday April 21st

This beautiful day started with an ironic twist of fate. Now that we have survived our major backpacking outings with no major mishaps, breakfast dealt a nasty blow. A highlight of breakfasts here has been the homemade jams--especially the fig and cherry. The Sundance Camp had a delicious tahini and cherry jam which I spread on my bread. On my second piece there was a loud crack and a piercing pain--a cherry pit that wasn't removed. So I have spent the day with varying degrees of pain and gloom. Some major damage has been done. Argh!

We proceeded by bus and shuttle to the cable car ride up Mount Olympos--a technologic and geologic marvel. The views are spectacular and we could look out over where we had been hiking the last few days. We went from sea level to some 7700 feet.

From there we took a bus to Antalya where we will spend two nights. It's a big city with some sections of new hotels trying to out do each other with their oppulance. There is a major university here too. We are fortunately in the old section where car traffic is restricted, streets are cobbled, and buildings are mostly old. Tomorrow we will try to do some laundry and I may persuade Cecily to join me for a Turkish bath. There is also a good museum in the area.
