We knew we'd be rained upon sooner or later--today it happened. Not too bad a we aren't camping or backpacking. The plan was to see Xanthos, a World Heritage Sight which was first settled around 800 BC, and to visit the market in Kinik. We toured Xanthos in rain and clouds. The men at the ticket counter seemed bewildered that we were going to walk around the ruins in a down pour, but then it cleared up and we dried out.

After Xanthos we walked back down the hill to Kinik, at which point it started raining again. So we ducked inside a bakery where we had tea yesterday. (We drink a lot of tea. Forget the coffee which is generally instant Nescafé.) They were happy to see us again today and we had some good soup and excellent baklava.

Then we went to the weekly market. It is much larger than our farmers' markets. The greenhouses in this area are quite remarkable. Thousands of greenhouses all around the city. The market had lots of fresh, in season fruits and vegitables, also clothes, fish, meat, hardware, plants and farm animals. It's so nice to have fresh tomatoes in April. They are served regularly for breakfast with cheese, cucumbers, olives, hard boiled eggs, bread and honey. Everyone offers tastes of their fare. We were mostly interested in dried fruits, nuts, and halva for the trail. The sample of Turkish Delight was truly delightful, much softer than what I have had in the states. We will have to buy some later.

As we got off the dolmus for the walk back to Patara village, we saw our camping companions from 3 nights ago. They had a heart wrenching separation from a dog who has hiked with them for 2 days and was not allowed on the bus.  They  asked us to look after her and  then drove off with dog crying. The dog followed us for about a km but then we hopped a dolmus and hope the she finds a home as she is quite sweet.
