Today started with heavy rains which thankfully dissipated before noon. The church of St Nicholas is simple and beautiful. Mostly Russian tour groups there as he is the patron saint of Russia as well as of children, the poor, and sailors. His day coincides with Cecily's birthday.
The bus ride to Cirali was another chance to experience public transportation awe and envy. A two hour ride on a comfortable bus with wifi for six dollars a person. Plus there is a steward on the bus who served snacks (pound cake) and beverages. The bus stations are clean and attractive and the person who works there is friendly and helpful. He watched our backpacks while we visited the church in Demre.
We ended up walking more than anticipated to see the flames on Mt Olympos. The awkward English explanation on the signage was more cause for laughter than education. We will have to do some independent research later and perhaps offer a clearer account to The Santa Claus Foundation who claim credit for the sign.
Now to bed in the most economical pansiyon to date - $25 for the two of us with full Turkish breakfast. Tomorrow we are back on the trail and tenting.
love your travelogue and amazing scenery.
